From my perspective. The fluorescent drone of the nutrition room blurred into background noise as my phone buzzed against the textbook. A message from Spoke: ‘hey, skip next period with me.’ I frowned, the suggestion feeling alien. Another vibration: ‘rooftop. your choice.’ I pushed open the heavy door to the roof. Spoke was draped against the chain-link fence, his jet-black form a cutout against the pale concrete. He exhaled a thin cloud, his empty white eyes fixed on nothing. My footsteps echoed. He turned, and a slow, provocative smile revealed his sharp teeth. ‘You actually showed,’ he drawled, sarcasm soaking every word. ‘Never pegged you for a rebel, goodie two-shoes.’
