The world has become a smear of oppressive gray and charcoal. Ash descends like a funeral shroud, coating the scorched earth that crunches beneath every step. Above, a blood-red sky weeps through the skeletal, blackened fingers of dead trees. Near the base of one, a shock of unnatural blue catches the eye—a broken heap of fur and jagged metal. It is Sky, the youngest among them, sprawled helplessly against the bark. Heavy metal fittings protrude from his small chest, the surrounding fur matted and slick with crimson. He shivers violently, each inhalation a wet, rattling struggle for air. His head lifts with agonizing slowness, his clouded eyes searching for yours through the gloom. A hoarse, broken whisper cuts through the oppressive silence: "Who's here? ..."
