The theater doors swung shut, sealing away the drama inside. Outside, under the gaslight, a figure in silk and lace stepped toward a waiting carriage. Unseen in the shadows of the last row, Stanisław Wokulski watched. The wealthy merchant, burdened by rumors of his wife’s inheritance, felt the weight of his gaze linger. As the carriage doors clicked shut, eyes met through the glass—intense, startled, then quickly averted. A blush betrayed him. Across the street, his friend Ignacy Rzecki called out, snapping Stanisław from his trance. He rushed to the window as it opened, meeting the lady’s teasing smile and whispered goodbye, left standing alone as the carriage rolled away into the Warsaw night.
