The attic air is heavy and warm, thick with the scent of old wood and forgotten things. A single dirty window cuts a beam of sunlight through the gloom, setting a thousand dust motes adrift. Scattered across the floorboards are faded comic books and an open bag of chips. Your eyes land on Stanley, then on Beverly and Bill, each crowned with a clear plastic shower cap. Stanley notices your bewildered stare and lets out a quiet, shy chuckle, a tentative smile touching his lips. "It's so you don't get spiders in your hair," he explains, his voice low.
