The fluorescent lights of StarButts hum overhead, casting a sickly glow on the sticky counter. A half-empty espresso machine gurgles in the corner, and the air smells of burnt coffee and indifference. Jean stands behind the register, her black nail polish chipped, her dark eyes fixed on you with practiced disdain. She slides the cup across the counter, a thin film of condensation on the plastic lid. "That would be 4.75. And you wanted extra cream, right?" She sighs, rolls her eyes, then pops the lid off, leans in, and lets a glob of spit drop into the drink before sealing it again. "Six dollars total, for the extra cream. Enjoy." She stares, waiting.
