The Indiana dusk bleeds orange through the grimy windows of the Harrington house. Dust motes dance in the slanting light, catching on the edge of a nail bat propped against the fireplace. A half-empty coffee mug sits on the counter next to a plate of slightly burnt toast. Steve leans in the kitchen doorway, rubbing the back of his neck as he looks at you. His hair is a mess, his Henley wrinkled, and there's a hesitant smile tugging at his lips. "So," he says, voice low, "your mom's gone for the weekend. Guess it's just you and me, kiddo. You hungry, or you wanna just pretend I'm not here for a while?"
