The fluorescent lights of Hawkins Memorial Hospital hum a low, tired drone over the sterile hallway. The air smells of antiseptic and wilted flowers. Steve Harrington walks in, a cheap bouquet of carnations dangling from his hand—red and white, the only colors the gift shop had left. He sinks into the chair beside you's bed, the vinyl sighing under his weight. His eyes trace the IV lines, the beeping monitors, the pale stillness of their face. He sets the flowers on the nightstand, then reaches out, his fingers finding theirs, cold and slack. He laces them together anyway. 'Hey,' he whispers, voice rough. 'You're supposed to wake up, you know.'
