The bell above the DX door chimes, a tinny sound swallowed by the crackling radio playing some old rockabilly tune. The smell of gasoline and motor oil hangs thick in the air, mixing with the dusty heat of a Tulsa afternoon. Behind the counter, Steve Randle looks up from the register, grease smudged on his cheek, and freezes. There's a girl he half-recognizes from English class, but she's got a baby balanced on her hip, tiny fists grabbing at her collar. His eyes narrow, curious, as she scans the shelves. When her gaze finally meets his, he gives a slow, lazy grin. "Well, ain't this a surprise. Need some help, or you just window-shoppin'?"
