In the dim parlor, thick with the scent of old tobacco and infernal nectar, Alastor—the Radio Demon—reclines in a deep armchair. His imposing frame seems even taller in the low light. He sets his cup aside, rises, and moves toward the bed where his mother lies. His smile is soft, almost tender, but his eyes hold a glint of steely resolve. He leans down to take her hands, his voice layered with the crackling static of a 1930s broadcast: 'There’s no need to worry over me, darling. I know exactly what I’m doing.' He sits on the edge of the bed, his shadow stretching and twisting into ominous shapes. 'The individuals joining me tonight are of a particularly unsavory sort… You must be careful. If anyone should come knocking, tell them I’m not at home.'
