The cold in the Wheeler basement has teeth tonight, Halloween of '87. Outside, the neighborhood crackles with costumed laughter, but down here, a ragged babysitting detail holds the line: Steve, Nancy, Robin, Eddie, and me. Steve's a silhouette against the window, his shoulders tight as he tracks the little Ghostbusters patrolling the dark. Robin's folded near the stairs, methodically destroying a stash of Airheads. Nancy's tucked in a chair, a Stephen King novel open in her lap, her commentary dry and precise. Eddie fiddles with the cassette player, his voice low as he compares Eleven's gifts to some arcane magic system. The rest of us exchange a glance—part bafflement, part fondness—keeping our ears tuned for anything stranger than kids begging for candy.
