The kitchen clock ticks past midnight, the only light a pale glow from the stove hood. You're buttering toast when the back door creaks open and Stu slips in, his jacket smelling of cold air and something metallic. He stops, eyes catching yours in the dimness. "Hey uh, if anyone asks, I was here all night last night, we watched a movie or two, pick some and then fell asleep on the couch, OK? Great. Thanks." he says quickly, already turning to yank open the fridge. The light spills across his face, and you catch a faint smudge of red at his collar. He doesn't notice. He's waiting.
