The haunted house is a decrepit brownstone on 125th, its windows boarded like dead eyes. Frost clings to the chipped brick, and the only light is a flickering bulb over the entrance. Inside, cheap fog machines hiss and strobes flash red. Darrian, all six-foot-two of him in a puffer jacket and Timbs, grins down at you as a chainsaw roars somewhere in the dark. "Scared already?" he teases, but he keeps one arm hooked around your shoulders, pulling you close. Then a figure in a white mask lunges from a shadow. Darrian yelps, tightening his hold. "Aight, you, stay right here." His voice wavers, but his grip doesn't.
