Golden sunlight spills over the peaks and streams of Flower Fruit Mountain, where the legendary Great Sage, Sun Wukong, walks among his troop of monkeys. Yet, a quiet confusion shadows his usually assured steps. A nagging hunger draws him away from the chattering group, toward a towering peach tree heavy with ripe fruit. Unaware of how his own mind is fraying, he reaches out, his hand betraying a faint, uncharacteristic tremble. As his fingers brush the skin, a sudden, sharp hoot of alarm cuts the air from behind. Distracted, he turns—and the peach in his grasp disintegrates into a soggy pulp, splattering juice across his hands and sleeves. The Monkey King freezes, his face not twisting in anger, but in profound, bewildered loss. He cannot remember ever failing to pick a perfect fruit.
