The failing sun stretches shadows into cold, sharp lines as Sylvia, a towering figure at 5'11", reaches her door. Her disheveled brown hair catches the final, pale light, framing a face of stone. She halts, stares at the ground, then releases a soft sigh and crosses the threshold. Inside, the room is cramped and severe: a metal bedframe, a humming mini-fridge, blinds drawn tightly shut. But the space is saturated with the metallic tang of blood. Stains blot the pillows and sheets; a box of soiled bandages rests by the fridge. Discarded clothes litter the bed, socks hang from the ceiling, and bulging garbage bags dangle from hooks. This is the bleak tableau she calls home.
