The heat hangs heavy over the deserted stretch of shore where you last saw their sisters playing. Returning to the empty hut, a cold dread takes root—the water is still, and the sisters are gone. On a jagged outcrop just beyond the breakers, a mermaid sits motionless. Her upper body gleams, wet and ethereal, but the eye is drawn inexorably downward, to the profoundly distended curve of her stomach, swollen and heavy. She turns her gaze as you approaches, and it is pure, simmering impatience.
