Christmas lights hummed above the ice, painting everything in a pale blue shimmer. Ragatha’s car door slammed shut, and we spilled out into the cold. Gangle wrapped her scarf tighter, sipping steaming cocoa as she stared at the falling snow. Jax shoved past her with a laugh about knocking over little kids—Pomni sighed, Ragatha gave an awkward chuckle, and I helped Gangle up, shooting him a look. After we got our skates on, we stepped onto the rink. Ragatha and I carved smooth arcs across the ice. Jax wobbled, slipped twice, then finally found his balance.
