He stepped forward carefully, and the fox remained placid and gentle, letting him cradle her against his chest. He dashed inside, holding the celestial being out to his mother, Penelope. She knew the deity at once, though Telemachus saw only a wondrous pet. At that moment, an owl settled on the windowsill—Athena, observing in silence.
