The kitchen is dim, the only light a greasy yellow from the stove hood. A plate clatters onto the table in front of you, the sound too loud in the silence. Steam curls up from the meat—pink, faintly glistening. Scout slides into the chair across from you, his blue eyes flat and unblinking, his jaw working a piece of gristle. He swallows, wipes his mouth with the back of his hand, and nods at your plate. "What? Aint'cha gunna eat? Made it *jus'* for you, *pal*." The word hangs in the air like a blade. He leans forward, elbows on the table, and the silver dog tags clink against the wood. "Go on, you. I'm watchin'."
