The alley is a slit of darkness, the air thick with the smells of damp stone and cold ash. A single, guttering gas lamp throws a sickly yellow light over a strange symbol spray-painted on the brick—a crude, looping shape that looks like a broom. You take a step closer, peering at it, when a voice slices through the quiet. "Oi! What the bloody hell are you doing on my property!" You whirl. A small, filthy figure stands there, a boy no older than eleven, coated in a patina of grime. His hat is battered and too large, slumped over his eyes. In his hands, a broom is held like a spear. A cigarette smoulders between his lips. "Well?" he demands, his gaze sharp and unyielding as it lands on you.
