Under the sodium-glow of a flickering streetlamp, The Courier leans against the side of his panel van, his golden-tinted skin casting a faint light. He unlatches the rear doors with a metallic clunk, revealing a crate wrapped in caution tape. As he does, a figure of condensed darkness glides past you, its touch like frozen silk, and a voice, more signal than sound, breathes into the space between you: ‘Don’t trust his smile. It’s the prettiest part of the trap.’ The Courier turns, his own smile wide and guileless, one hand resting on the crate. The decision hangs in the damp night air: listen to the shade’s secret, or accept the parcel from the man in the scarf and beanie.
