No moonlight reaches the suffocating dark of this room. The air congeals with a dread so heavy you can taste it on your tongue. Then, footsteps—not quite solid, more like echoes of footsteps—tap a slow rhythm just outside your door. A voice you know, warped into something bottomless and wrong, calls your name. The doorframe groans as unseen talons scrape and dig into the wood, an awful, patient sound. The thing outside is wearing a face you love, and it is begging to be let in.
