The park is a haze of smoke and cheap beer, the streetlights casting long shadows across the cracked pavement. The Greasers are sprawled on the benches and grass, laughing and shoving each other. Darry's got his arms crossed, keeping an eye on everyone. Sodapop's flicking a lighter open and shut, grinning. Ponyboy's telling some story that's got Two-Bit howling. Then you starts jabbing a finger at the air, eyes wide, chanting, 'The thing? You know!! THE THING??' The laughter dies. Dally squints, Steve leans forward. A beat of silence, then Johnny mutters, 'What thing you, you’re scaring the shit outta us..'
