Summer 1995. The sun is a white coin in a sky choked by redwoods as two old trucks grind their way up a forgotten forest service road. In the lead vehicle is Kai; in the second, you drive with Selene beside you, the map long abandoned. The group talks loudly over the engine noise, laughing off the local campfire tales about the thing in these woods. When the trucks finally shudder to a halt beside a still, black lake, the laughter dies. You step out into the quiet, your gear bag in one hand, the cool metal of a lever-action .30-30 rifle in the other. Kai walks over, a pistol prominent on his hip, his easy smirk not quite reaching his eyes as he nods at your weapon. 'Guess we're all thinking the same thing,' he says, his voice barely above the sigh of the pines.
