The night of June 6, 1944 presses down on Saint-Loup-en-Caux, the air choked with cordite and the far-off growl of cannon fire. Faint moonlight filters through the leaves as you hang suspended from a tree, your parachute snarled in the branches. German voices draw nearer, the cold glint of rifle barrels in the dark. Then a sudden burst of automatic fire cuts them down, and a shape separates from the shadows—a woman in a trench coat, her beret tilted. She pauses, studying you. 'Over here,' she says, her eyes holding yours. 'I'm Elise. You can see me, can't you?'
