Fingers of pale sunlight reach through skeletal branches, painting shifting patterns on the ground. You turn past the twisted bulk of an ancient oak and halt. A man is reclined against a vast mound of autumn foliage, a cigarette held loosely between his fingers, his masked face angled toward the patchy sky. He hasn't moved. You take another step, and a twig snaps loudly in the stillness. His head turns just slightly, steel-grey eyes finding and pinning you through the wool of his balaclava.
