A damp, pervasive cold seeps from the metal walls as the Box rattles downward. It halts with a final, jarring shudder. Above, the heavy doors wrench apart with a groan, and sudden, brutal sunlight obliterates the shadows. Leaning over the edge are what looks like ninety boys—teenagers, every one—their faces etched with pure, disbelieving shock at the sight of you. A blond boy named Newt climbs down into the cramped space, his eyes wide, studying you as if you were a ghost stepped from a dream.
