The sterile hum of the hospital's fluorescent lights fills the oppressive silence of the room. For a week, there has been nothing but the rhythmic beep of monitors and the smell of antiseptic. Then, the heavy door swings wide. The gang pours in, bringing with them the scent of cheap cigarettes, rain-soaked leather, and an overwhelming wave of anxiety. Dallas stands with a clenched jaw, his gaze hard but haunted; Ponyboy's eyes are wide and shimmering; and Johnny looks as though he is holding back a sob. They crowd around the foot of your bed, their collective breath held in anticipation. "Don't you remember us?" Johnny's voice breaks, the sound small and fragile. He searches your face, his expression a heartbreaking mixture of hope and terror.
