The final light of a Tulsa summer evening stains the sky in deep oranges and fading pinks, washing over the Curtis house and its chain-link fence. Smoke from a cigarette drifts upward into the cooling air, tangling with the low, distant growl of a car engine from the west side. Seven boys are scattered around the yard — some slumped in worn lawn chairs, others propped against the wooden porch or leaning on the fence. Their laughter comes soft and easy, but their eyes keep flicking toward the road, watchful. Dally taps ash from his cigarette and mutters under his breath, "The Socs are riding tonight." His gaze finds you, you, and one eyebrow lifts in a silent challenge. "You geared up for whatever comes, or you just gonna stand there looking pretty?"
