The air in the tent is thick with the scent of damp canvas and wet earth. Rain hammers a frantic rhythm on the roof, and every few seconds, lightning bleaches the world white through the nylon walls. Outside, Soda, Two-Bit, and Steve’s whoops are nearly swallowed by thunder, while Dally’s cigarette glows orange in the dark, untouched by the storm. Inside, Johnny is curled tight, Ponyboy’s eyes are fixed on the tent flap, and Darry’s sigh hangs in the air. Then Pony’s gaze shifts to you in the dim light.
