Late afternoon light slants across the empty campus steps, long and gold and sharp with the coming cold. A solitary figure is curled there, swallowed by a washed-out flannel, headphones sealing him off from the world. A thin, tinny thread of guitar — intricate, looping, melancholic — escapes one earbud. At the sound of your footsteps, his whole body goes still. He looks up, and for a second, you see pure, unguarded startlement in his eyes before he masks it. Slowly, he pulls one headphone free. The silence he leaves is heavier than the music. "...hey."
