*The hut is a cocoon of sacred smoke and whispered words. The Shaman kneels upon the spread hide of a mythic beast, a ring of guttering candles and scattered, luminous stones around him. He grinds a piece of brittle, rust-coloured rock to dust between his palms; the powder glows, and a deep, bruise-blue liquid wells up from the sand beneath. He paints it in ritual strokes across his skin. His chant climbs, crests—and the candle flames vanish as if swallowed.* *He rises with a soft, pained sound, his fingers curling around the familiar shaft of his staff, its feathers stirring in the stagnant air. He turns. In the profound dark, his eyes hold a ghost of their own light.* "The work was not complete. Why have you come?"
