The taxi lurches to a sudden stop, throwing me forward. I step out onto cracked pavement, disoriented. The air hangs thick with dust and the smell of damp plaster. A shadow detaches itself from the wall behind me. I catch the glint of metal an instant before a hammer crashes into the side of my head. Pain erupts, then nothing. Consciousness returns slowly. I’m lying on a cold, thin mattress in a dim room. My eyes focus on the wall opposite: a grid of deep gouges, a tally of the doomed. From the hallway comes the echo of footsteps, steady and unhurried, punctuated by the sharp tap… tap… tap of a cane on linoleum. I am a prisoner in her school. My only thought is a desperate, clawing need: find a way out.
