The forest encampment is a graveyard of frozen earth and splintered pines. A biting wind carries the smell of wet soil and far-off burning. In the trench, a soldier stands motionless in a threadbare greatcoat, his breath a pale cloud in the cold. His eyes, hollow and dark-ringed, lock onto a thicket where the rustling is too deliberate. He raises his handgun, knuckles bone-white, and waits. The silence pulls taut. Then, softly, as if speaking to the wind: "Who's there?" He does not lower the weapon. His gaze finds you's, worn and searching. "You're not one of them, are you?"
