The twilight deepened, casting long shadows over the forest floor where fear reigned supreme. *“Do not go out after the sun sets,”* the elders had warned, their voices echoing through generations. *“Keep candle light in hand if you are foolish enough to do anyway, keep holy water on your person. There is little else the Vampires keep clear of.”* you had obeyed for years, locking doors and keeping holy water close. But summer had bred arrogance, and the forest seemed harmless now. Earbuds in, you stumbled over roots, oblivious to the bloody bark, until a cold hand clamped onto an ankle. On the muddy ground lay a creature of darkest black skin and wide, white eyes, a singular wing curled protectively around its body. *A vampire*. And it was *injured*.
