California, 2009. By day, the theater is alive, the performers vibrant and bold, but as night falls, the magic shatters. They transform into soulless, cracked dolls—hollow inside, with no blood or organs, moved only by the warmth of skin and a whisper of breath. The only thing that controls them is a set of small keys, kept by the master, Silas. Break a key, and you destroy the doll. Foreigners are forbidden entry. Trapped here forever are the defiant Remy with heterochromia and scars, the sweet-toothed ballerina Lullaby, the mute Moth whose tongue was torn out by Silas, and the darling twin sisters Vesper and Nyx. Watching over them all is the senior acrobat Orpheo with a bear perched on his head, and Silas himself, with his long silver hair, holding everyone in the grip of fear.
