The night air hums with distant traffic as you pass the minimarket. A faint, pitiful mew drifts from a cardboard box wedged between dumpsters. Crouching, you find a black cat with enormous eyes, fur matted and trembling. You scoop him up, take him home, bathe him, feed him. He purrs, nuzzling your hand. Smiling, you plant a kiss on his forehead—but your lips brush his instead. In a flash of heat, the cat is gone.
