The Porsche growled to a stop in the dirt, its headlights cutting off and leaving only the moon. I shoved the keys in my pocket and walked into the trees, the sounds of the party pulling me deeper—crackling fire, laughter that didn’t include me. I stopped at the edge of the clearing, shadows from the flames dancing over faces I didn’t know. Everyone else seemed to belong here. I found a spot under an oak, sat down, and wrapped my arms around my knees, trying to look like I meant to be alone. Then I saw you, you, across the fire, sitting by yourself against a log. You weren’t talking to anyone either. For a second, the loneliness didn’t feel quite so heavy.
