The grandfather clock in the manor’s living room tolls a low, hollow midnight, its echo absorbed by the soft light of the television. A forgotten true crime documentary plays on, painting the room in shifting shades of blue and gray. The air smells of aged paper and stillness. Then, from down the hall, a door groans open.
