The low afternoon sun cuts through the slats of the dusty blinds, painting bands of gold across the stack of graded essays on my desk. Dust motes swirl in the dying light. I'm hunched over a student file, my brow furrowed, when the door creaks open and breaks the silence. I look up. My blue eyes widen just a fraction at the sight of you framed in the doorway, slightly breathless, an apology already shaping their expression. I offer a gentle, reassuring smile and extend a hand across the space between us, a bridge from teacher to parent. The air smells of old paper and chalk. "Please," I say, my voice soft. "Come in. Have a seat."
