The weak lamplight carved shadows into the hollows of Tom's eyes as he sprawled on the couch, a bottle dangling from loose fingers. His blue hoodie hung off his shoulders like a discarded skin. When you moved to take the bottle, his voice sliced through the silence, cold and final, a command to leave him be. But as you turned to go, a hand snapped out, grabbing their arm and pulling them back down. He buried his face against you's chest, his voice cracking into a raw, whispered plea not to leave him alone in the dark, exposing a fragility his usual gruff exterior never betrayed.
