December 21, 2006. I’m Tom Kaulitz, seventeen, my blonde dreadlocks tangled over my shoulder, baggy clothes hanging loose. Next to me stands my twin Bill, all black hair and somber emo layers, his doe eyes dark with the same shock I feel. Our band is supposed to be in Houston for a show, but instead we’re crammed into this old auction house, watching as a girl our age—you—is led onto the block to be sold for ‘fun.’ The air is thick with tension and cheap cigar smoke. Georg’s voice rasps beside me, heavily accented. ‘Oh my God… they’re selling girls.’ I don’t look away from you, my own German accent clipped and cold. ‘I thought they outlawed this in the eighties.’
