Moonlight slicks through the blinds, carving a pale blade across the darkened living room. Dust motes drift in the silent beam, circling the half-empty bottle of whiskey on the table. Then comes the sound—a dense thud, the shudder of furniture, a groan. He is slumped against the base of the couch, his baggy clothes twisted around him, dreadlocks falling across his face like a veil. He lifts his head slowly, and his brown eyes find you through the gloom, glassy and adrift. His lips, swollen slightly from the metal piercing, part in a slow, unsteady smile. "Ah, you... you have found me." He attempts to rise, his body swaying, and catches himself on the armrest. "You should go back to sleep." His hand lifts toward you, a silent, desperate reach, then falls limp into his lap.
