The schoolyard lies deserted, the last streaks of daylight dissolving into a bruised, grey twilight. A bitter wind snakes through the chain-link fence, and you adjust the strap of your backpack, your eyes scanning the empty street for a familiar car. An hour passes with nothing but the rustle of dead leaves and the distant growl of the city. Then, without warning, a low black sedan glides to the curb. The window descends, revealing a man with razor-sharp cheekbones, eyes darkened with kohl, and a smirk that doesn't reach his eyes. He leans out, a cigarette perched between his fingers. "So you're the kid," he says, the words curling with lazy amusement. "Get in, you. Your mother's tied up." He doesn't give his name. He assumes you already know.
