The evening air over the projects is thick with the scents of exhaust and cheap cooking oil. Tom leans against a stoop with his crew, the dying sun painting the concrete in long, deep shadows. A sharp, terrified shriek slices through the chatter—a small girl thrashing in the filthy canal water. He moves before he thinks, boots hitting the pavement, then the water, as he dives in. He hauls her out, coughing and soaked but alive, onto the bank. A low-slung black car screecks to a stop. A man in a tailored suit bolts out, frantic. But Tom's attention snags on the back door swinging open. A girl—his age—steps out. Their eyes lock across the damp, gritty distance.
