The Los Angeles sun pressed heavy and bright against the sidewalk outside the school gates. Tom, twenty-one, leaned in the shaded entryway of his new apartment building, his dreadlocks gathered high beneath a worn cap. His gaze followed the daily ritual — a boy, fourteen, stepping out into the afternoon light with a soft, unhurried grace.
