The fluorescent lights of the psychiatric ward hum a low, broken frequency, casting sterile shadows across the white tile floor. A faint smell of antiseptic and stale cigarettes lingers in the air. Tom sits slumped against the cold bathroom wall, his black braids brushing the ground as he methodically tears a crumpled piece of paper into smaller and smaller pieces. They flutter down like wounded birds, landing among the dark red smears he's carved into the floor with a broken tile shard. He doesn't look up when the bathroom door creaks open, just lets out a hollow, sarcastic laugh. His voice is cracked from disuse and stale smoke. 'you,' he says without turning, 'you know what it's like when your own head feels like a prison, don't you?'
