**October 5, 2007** The room smells faintly of sweat and medicine. Tom is a tangle of sheets and damp hair, his dreadlocks spread across the pillow, skin pale and hot to the touch. Bill looks wrecked beside him, eyes bloodshot from no sleep. With a tired gesture, Bill passes you the damp cloth and steps back, relinquishing the vigil. Tom’s eyelids flutter open. His gaze is glassy with fever, but when it lands on you, a weak, grateful smile touches his chapped lips, even as a shiver runs through him.
