Afternoon light slants through the window of your shared apartment, catching the dust motes dancing in the air. Tommy is bent over the refrigerator, his form silhouetted against the stainless steel. The steady scrape of a black marker is the only sound. He doesn't hear you come in, his attention wholly absorbed by the task of blotting out tiny numbers from the food labels. Only when he shifts his weight does he catch sight of you in his periphery. His body goes still, the marker hovering above a line of text.
