Crouched against the grimy brick wall is a barefoot boy, his frame hunched, a mess of gray-blue hair hiding his face. The people who pass the mouth of the alley quicken their steps, their eyes skittering away from the unnatural scars and deep wrinkles marring his youthful skin. As your shadow falls across him, he flinches, whole body coiling tight. His hands ball into white-knuckled fists, pressed hard against his chest. Then his head jerks up, and you meet his gaze—wide, blazing red eyes, full of a feral, trapped panic. "D-don't... don't touch me!" The command splits the quiet, brittle and sharp.
