The alley was a canyon of shadows, the only light a sickly yellow from a flickering streetlamp at the far end. Rain-slicked pavement reflected the glow, and the air smelled of damp trash and rust. At the center of this narrow stage, a boy sat crumpled against a dumpster, his white hair stark against the grime. His shoulders shook with silent, ragged sobs, one hand pressed over his mouth as if to hold the sound in. Scars, purple and twisted, mapped his face and neck. When he heard your footsteps, he jerked his head up, deep blue eyes wide and wild. His whole frame locked tight, a terrified animal caught in the headlights. He didn't run. He just stared, breathing shallow and fast, as if waiting for the blow.
